Very disappointed to see that it does not play all kind of avi and wmv files. The primary reason i brought wdtv was to play all my avi and wmv files on tv and this does not work. Will there be any fix to resolve this issue.? Any firmware updates etc?
Compatible AVI/WMV file types for WD TV HD/Live/Mini Media Player
From WD TV support page, we find that both AVI and WMV files are included in all WD TV products supported file types list. However, both AVI or WMV files loaded into WD TV media player should meet with the following requirements for different WD TV products.
WD TV HD Media Player (Gen 1)
WMV 9 and AVI (MPEG-1/2/4, Xvid, AVC)
MPEG2/4 and WMV9 support up to 1920x1080p 24fps, 1920x1080i 30fps, 1280x720p 60fps resolution
WD TV Live Streaming Media Player/WD TV Live Hub Media Center/WD TV Live Plus HD Media Player/WD TV Live HD Media Player/WD TV HD Media Player (Gen 2)
WMV 9 and AVI (MPEG-4, Xvid, AVC)
MPEG2/4 and WMV9 support up to 1920x1080p 24fps, 1920x1080i 30fps, 1280x720p 60fps resolution
WD TV Mini Media Player
AVI(Xvid, MPEG-1/2/4)
From above lists, we can see that AVI files encoded with Xvid is supported by all models of WD TV, as for WMV, WD TV Mnini Media Player does not list playback support for it, WD TV HD Media Player and WD TV Live media player only supports to play WMV files encoded with WMV9. Therefore, it is not strange why people can not import some kinds of AVI or WMV files into WD TV.

How to Convert Incompatible AVI/WMV to WD TV HD/Live/Mini Media Player?
Step 1: Load AVI/WMV files to the program.
Launch the application on your computer, click “File” > “Load Video/Audio” or “Load from Folder” to import unsupported AVI/WMV file formats to the program.
Step 2: Output WD TV Live supported video format.
From “Format” drop-down list, select “Common Video” > -Divx AVI – Audio Video Interleaved (Divx)(*.avi)” as the proper video file format to play on all WD TV products.
Step 3: Carry out the conversion.
Go back to the main UI and click “Convert”button to start AVI/WMV to WD TV supported format conversion process.
