Problems to play AVI files on Kodi
“I’ve just installed Kodi on my windows 10 laptop and fired it up to have a little play and start to understand how to use it. I have a number of MP4 and AVI videos on the laptop and I can navigate through “videos”, “files” and “videos” to the folder and all my files are listed both the MP4 and the AVI. If a select a MP4 file it plays as you would expect. However, when I select a AVI file nothing plays. I simply get the counter scrolling through the length of the file and it plays the audio, but no picture. Clearly I’m missing the obvious somewhere here, but in my defence I am very new to this.”
Why Kodi fail to play AVI files?
After searching for Kodi supported file formats, we get the information that Kodi has included native playback support for AVI container file formats. However, it is well known that AVI is a multimedia container file format which can contain various different video and audio data such as Divx, Xvid, DV, MPEG-1, MPEG-2, MPEG-4 (A)SP, H.264/MPEG-4 AVC, VC-1/WMV, Real Video, Theora, MVC, etc.
From above information, we can see that Kodi lacks the ability to handle AVI files with the container codec of Divx, Xvid, DV, etc. To get unsupported AVI files played on Kodi, you will need to perform a codec transcoding process.
